Topped with an Abalone Shell Medallion

From our Jewellery Box collection, we are delighted to offer this Dome Top Coromandel Jewellery Box. The Jewellery Box of rectangular shape veneered in exotic Coromandel wood features a domed top with a central Abalone medallion to the lid flanked by two brass rope mounts. The abalone medallion is surrounded by a brasswork motif which matches the escutcheon to the front. When opened the Jewellery Box reveals a teal cushioned velvet lining with blue silk water paper. A removable tray with several compartments sits in the base perfect for storing various jewellery having three larger sections and two cushioned areas for rings. The tray lifts out to allow access to further storage below for large items such as watches. The Jewellery Box dates to the late 19th century during the Victorian period Circa 1880.

The Jewellery Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.

Abalone is a name for a group of small to very large marine gastropod molluscs in the family Haliotidae. The shell is convex, rounded to oval in shape, and may be highly arched or very flattened. The highly iridescent inner nacre (mother of pearl) layer of the shell is traditionally used as a decorative item, in various applications such as jewellery, furniture and musical instruments.
