Dome Topped Stationary Box & Matching Ink Blotter

From our Boxes collection, we are delighted to offer this Victorian Victorian Coromandel Stationery Box & Folder. The Stationary Box and folder are veneered to the exterior in exotic Coromandel with large brass strapping across the bodies. At each end of the brass strapping to the front circular porcelain plaques feature enamelled cherubs. The top of the box has a brass scrollwork mount fitted with a matching porcelain plaque. When opened both the box and folder reveal a matching blue silk water paper lining. The Box contains a large storage space for writing implements, letters, and desk pieces and is signed to the rear by the retailer Trussell Brighton. The blotter allows the user to place blotting paper within the folder and protect any surface while in use. The set dates to the late 19th century Victorian period circa 1880.

The Stationery Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Coromandel is a valuable wood found in India, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. It has a contrasting hazel-brown colour with black grain. It is a dense, heavy wood that is so popular it has been logged to extinction over the last few hundred years. This makes Calamander pieces even more special.

Blotter (paper) is a highly absorbent type of paper used to absorb ink or oil from writing material, particularly from quills or fountain pens.
