With Red Watersilk Lined Partitions

From our Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this Solid Ebony Anglo Indian Stationary Box. The Box of rectangular form with a domed top and stepped plinth base features a central oval watercolour to the front with a precessional festival march of Rath Yatra, the Chariot Festival celebrated by Hindus. The scene is decorated with a large decorated elephant and multiple figures below a brass escutcheon. The rest of the exterior is exquisitely carved with scrolling vines and blossoming flowers. The interior of the box is lined in red water silk paper and red velvet to the inside of the lid. There are four equal partitions for housing letters and documents which can be securely locked away using the key. The Stationery Box dates to the Victorian period circa 1840.

The Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Ebony is often almost completely black with very little visible grain often with a subtle red/purple hue. This wood is very expensive due to the slow-growing trees which can often be gnarly affecting the yield of straight workable wood. Most ebonies are very dense making work with hand tools very difficult and can quickly clunt cutting tools. This density however offers an excellent finish on turned items.

Anglo Indian refers to the term given to pieces made for the colonial British market. It usually encompasses British Aesthetics of subject with Indian influences such as inlay or material.
