Featuring Multiple Scenes of Brighton

From our Sewing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this Tunbridge ware box. The box of rectangular shape elevated upon four ball feet features several scenes from Brighton including the Pavillions and the chain bridge all within bordered cartouches. The box is an early example of Tunbridge wear which is fully painted to simulate Rosewood with painted panels however, the box base is made from Sycamore. The box features two lids containing multiple compartments for storing sewing accessories and tools. The first lid is located at the rear and opens to reveal four small compartments with the second larger compartment opening from the front. The box is complete with its original paper lining to the inside.

The box comes complete with working lock and key.

Tunbridge Ware is a form of inlaid woodwork which is typically in the form of boxes, smaller objects and/or accessories that are characteristic of Tonbridge and the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent in the 18th and 19th centuries. The decoration consists of a mosaic of many very small pieces of different coloured woods combined to make a decorative scene.

Sycamore, also known as Harewood is a member of the Maple family, found in Europe. It is light yellow in colour and is often a very clean wood, with a straight, fine grain. The wood is often pippy. However, these pips are usually a very similar colour to the rest of the wood making them hardly visible.
