Solid Silver Tea Caddy with Invisible Hinge

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are pleased to offer this solid silver tea caddy by Elkington & Company. The Tea Caddy of unusual serpentine form with shaped sides extensively decorated with a central band of chased stars around an oval cartouch bearing a monogram which is mirrored on the rear. Above and below the central band are two chased foliage strips are found with neatly finished borders. The lid with a matching engraving with stars and further floral chasing. The lid lifts up on a beautiful hidden hinge which is encompassed into the rear of the lid which when shut lays flush. The underside of the Tea Caddy is hallmarked with the registration number 11686, silver marks for Birmingham 1882 and FE for Frederick Elkington and the company name Elkington & Co.

Victorian sterling silver tea caddy weighs 458 grams and comes with a fully working lock and key.


Elkington and Co. was founded by George Richards Elkington and his cousin, Henry Elkington, in the 1830s. It operated under the name G. R. Elkington & Co. until 1842 when Josiah Mason joined the firm, becoming the third partner. It then operated as Elkington, Mason, & Co. until 1861 when the partnership with Mason was terminated. The firm then operated independently for over one hundred years as Elkington & Co. from 1861 until 1963. After 1963 it was taken over by British Silverware Ltd and in 1971  became a subsidiary of Delta Metal Co. Ltd.
