Description

Here, we present an unusual Mahogany-veneered Tea Caddy in the form of a miniature breakfront sideboard, circa. 1845.

With beautifully carved columns to the front with flame Mahogany panels and a beautifully carved back-splat. This Mahogany Tea Caddy has a hinged lid, which is held secure by a hidden drawer, in the center. The hidden drawer has two small finger tabs on the underside, these allow it to be slightly opened which then releases a catch on the lid, allowing for the caddy to be opened!

Lifting the lid to the Sideboard Tea Caddy reveals three solid Rosewood lids which each have rosewood turned integral handles. Removing these lids, shows more of the caddy’s interior where you can see it still has traces of its original foil lining. This wonderful miniature sideboard tea caddy has rich colour and superb patination, and would be an excellent addition to one’s true Tea Caddy Collection.

In purchasing a Tea Caddy or Tea Chest from us, you can be assured that they have been carefully examined and assessed, and only restored where absolutely necessary. Buying a luxury piece from us gives you peace of mind that you are buying a genuine antique; our name is also frequently cited as provenance by Major Auction houses.

This charming and distinctive Caddy is pictured and presented in the expertly researched book: The Story of British Tea Chests and Caddies by Anne Stevens, (Part [2].Chapter [5], Figure [5.1 14], at the top-right of Page [129]), an in-depth study of the relevance of tea, tea chests and caddies to British society – this is a must-buy book for historians, collectors and those interested in the decorative arts.
