From our Writing Box collection, we are pleased to offer this French Boulle Writing Box. The Writing Box of small form having a square shaped body veneered in ebonised pear wood with a sloped lid inlaid with fine scrolling boulle work. The top of the lid with a central plaque with a name reading ‘Fritz seiner Mimi’ and an escutcheon within the top hinged lid. To access the writing slope you must unlock the top thin lid and hinge it back and then you can access the main writing slope. The Writing Slope is finished in red leather and framed with a gold tooling with an embossed decorative outer border. The top half of the slope features a large storage area which is accessed by folding the top half down. The top of the box houses two inkwells which sit on either side of the central pen tray which has a turned handle. The Writing Box dates to the second half of the 19th century circa 1860.

The Boulle Writing Box comes complete with working lock and tasselled key.

Boulle is a rich marquetry process or inlay perfected by renowned French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle (1642–1732). It involves veneering furniture with sheets of tortoiseshell which have been meticulously inlaid with brass and/or pewter in elaborate designs, often incorporating arabesques.
