Screw Top Domed Lid


From our Tea Caddy collection, we are delighted to offer this Edwardian Tortoiseshell & Silver Tea Caddy by George Fox of London. The Tea caddy of cylindrical form with a domed lid and silver tea flower finial. The Tea Caddy made from thick tortoiseshell mounted in a sterling silver frame with onlaid silver scrollwork patterns to each panel. The Tea Caddy is finished with a good quality screw top lid to keep your tea secure and is hallmarked Sterling Silver, London by George Fox dated 1907.


George Fox (1816 – 1910) was the son of renowned silversmith Charles Fox. George entered a joint maker’s mark with his brother Charles Thomas Fox located at 139 Old Street, London where they are listed until 1852 as working silversmiths. C.T. & G. Fox then moved to 13 Queen Street (renamed 13 Bateman Street in 1885), Soho, where they are listed as working silversmiths. Charles retired in December 1860 leaving George Fox as sole partner in the firm. In 1891 the business moved to 50 Berwick Street, Soho, London where in 1892 they were listed as manufacturing silversmiths, repairs, gilding, plating etc. to the trade.

Sterling Silver is an alloy composed by weight of 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The sterling silver standard has a minimum millesimal fineness (parts per thousand) of 925.

Edwardian the last period in British history to be named after the monarch who reigned over it. Although Edward VII reigned from 1901 to 1910, the Edwardian period is generally considered to have ended at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
