Antique Rosewood brass bound Jewellery Boxwith original leather case.

The leather case has the initials ” M. W.” and various stickers and even some wax seals on the opening edge. The box once belonged to Mary Soames, Baroness Soames, LG, DBE, FRSL who was the youngest of the five children of Winston Churchill and his wife, Clementine. She was the wife of Christopher Soames.

The fabulous jewellery box is typical of the David Edwards works shop, it features quadrant brass edging for added strength, inlaid and engraved monogram on the top and brass escutcheon.

The interior features a lift out tray with several compartments lined with blue leather and purple silk velvet with two compartments for rings, earrings and cufflinks.

Housed inside the lid of the box is a leather bound, gold tooled blotter.

This fabulous jewellery box has a fully working lock and tasselled key.

David Edwards of 21 King Street, Bloomsbury Square was Writing Box and Case maker to the Royal family and inventor of the patent military travelling case. He also made tea chests, jewellery boxes, sewing boxes and canteen cases of the highest quality. He and his brother Thomas were also known to have worked from James Street and Orange Street. Edwards was known for using the highest quality timbers, intricate inlaid brass, decorative handles and complex mechanisms for secret compartments. He was bought out by Asprey in 1859 and had two royal warrants from King George IV and Queen Victoria.
