Seven Treasures Style Design

From our Tea Caddy collection, we are pleased to offer this unusual Chinese Lacquer Cash Tea Chest. The Tea Chest mounted upon four mythical beast feet with flared wings with a shaped body styled as Japanese Seven Treasures (Shippou Tsunagi) with similarities to the Chinese Cash (Chinese Coin). The Tea Chest is decorated extensively to the outside with figures in various pursuits with two gilt foliage borders. When opened the Tea Chest reveals the large single pewter Tea Caddy with double sealed lid with engraved bird decoration and a border of Greek Key. The Chest is faced with gilt design and two separate rice plants. The Tea Chest dates to the Chinese Xianfeng Period (1851-1861) circa 1860.

East Asian lacquer is a resin made from the highly toxic sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, which is native to the area and a close relative of poison ivy. In essence, lacquer is a natural plastic; it is remarkably resistant to water, acid, and, to a certain extent, heat.

Pewter is an alloy consisting mostly of tin which has been mixed with small amounts of other metals such as copper, lead or antimony to harden it and make it more durable.
