Constructed from Solid Mahogany

From our Apothecary Box collection, we are pleased to offer this George III Mahogany Apothecary Cabinet. The Cabinet is made from solid Mahogany with single ribbed base, top loop carry handle and twin brass escutcheons, one false for symmetry. When unlocked the right door opens and the left door can be unlatched from the inside. Both doors hinge outwards revealing an extensive contents of Georgian medicinal bottles. The individual partitions house 12 glass bottles with two drawers in the centre, the lower drawer contains for small glass jars and a glass mortar & Pestle while the top drawer houses a set of brass scales, a measuring beaker, pallet knife and funnel. The secret compartment can be accessed via the hidden tab to the top right hand corner of the box. Once pulled forward it unlocks the rear compartment on the back of the box which slides to the left revealing a further four glass jars. The hidden jars often were used to conceal both poisons and highly dangerous medical substances. The Apothecary Box dates to the early 19th century Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1810.

The Apothecary Box comes complete with a working lock and tasselled key.

Apothecary is an English term for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses medicine. The modern terms ‘pharmacist’ and ‘chemist’ have taken over this role.

Georgian era was a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV.

Mahogany is the name given to many types of tropical hardwood and can be found in Africa, India and South America, most of which are a red-brown colour with a fine, even grain. This makes it easily workable and gives it a durable finish which attributes to its popularity with many kinds of furniture.
