Description

Miraculous Antique Solid Mahogany Apothecary Box with a flush-fitting campaign style brass carry handle and a brass escutcheon, including a dummy key profile.

Opening the doors of this remarkable large Apothecary box reveals 19 glass jars; 14 of these live in the doors of the box, and the other five jars are in the main body of the box.

There are five drawers – The top drawer contains several compartments and houses a set of medical supplies – weighing scales and brass weights, measuring beaker, glass funnel and a glass jar. The left drawer contains a Glass Mortar & Pestle, and the drawer on the right contains two Silver topped jars, and three small glass jars, with glass stoppers.

The two drawers in the center, have to be removed so you can open their sliding tops.

The large drawer to the front of the box has some very interesting contents. Inside the drawer is a small leather box that is lined with purple velvet containing scalpels and clamps. The drawer holds various other medical tools contains a syringe with an embossed label that reads: “Manufactured by ALLEN & HANBURYS Ltd Trade Mark A. D. 1795. 48 Wicmore St London W”. Founded in 1715, Allen & Hanburys LTD were a British pharmaceutical manufacturer and pastille maker who were one of the first British manufacturers of cod liver oil!

There is also a silver ‘Hypodermic Case’ with markings on the top which read: “Trademark ‘Hypoloid’ Brand Hypodermic case No 62.

Burroughs Wellcome & Co. London (Eng.) New York Montreal Sydney Cape Town Milan Bombay Shanghai Buenos Aires”

This compelling case also houses a syringe and more small glass bottles that sit in a pivoting rack.

This Mysterious Apothecary Box also has a secret! Inside the box next to the glass jar on the far right side is a small brass tab. Pulling this brass tab forwards reveals a panel at the back of the box that can be slid across sideways, unveiling five ‘important’ glass jars. These would usually contain poison and dangerous chemicals, hence why they would need to be hidden so secretly!

The box has a fully working lock with a tasselled key included.
