Antique writing box veneered in striking figured Coromandel, has brass edging and double stringing as well as containing two secret compartments one being a top-secret document drawer. With a vacant initial plate and large escutcheon both frame with brass stringing. Each side has a brass carry handle to make transporting the box easier.

Opening this antique writing box reveals a large turquoise leather writing surface adorned with gold and embossed tooling. This writing surface is divided into two halves, the lower lifts to reveal seven storage compartments separated by wooden dividers. The top half of the writing surface lifts to reveal a large storage compartment which has a secret! There are three hidden drawers behind a false wall! This can be accessed by gently pulling up on the divider next to the right-hand inkwell, which will cause the false wall to spring forward.

On the right-hand edge of the open box, there is a brass retaining pin that holds the side drawer in place when the box is closed. Lifting the brass pin all the way out allows the drawer to be opened/removed using the incorporated carry handle. It can be fully removed to gain access to another top-secret document drawer housed above it. With the cover to the three little drawers open, remove the small drawer nearest to the end of the larger drawer you have just removed, putting your finger in the void and pressing against the right side of the walls compartment the secret document drawer should drop down in the void.

This writing box comes with two victorian threaded brass crown top inkwells, has fully working locks and tasselled keys. The key must be turned clockwise to unlock.
