Description

Antique military mahogany captains writing box by Gaines with brass straps and corner brackets each with steel slot screws for added strength and durability. The top has a oval vacant initial plate with matching escutcheon to the front. The sides of the box have campaign military flush fitting handles, the right hand side has a drawer which can only be accessed once the box is open and a pin is removed which is in the lectern. Removing the drawer reveals another retailers & makers label.

Opening the captains writing box reveals its original baize writing surface, two brass travelling inkwells and lifting the lower half reveals ribbon strung back and large a storage space which houses a removable reading rail which can be attached to the lid of the military box, which can be lifted at an angle with the use of the brass lectern stand on the right hand side of the open military box.

The lockable top half of the writing surface reveals another ribbon strung underside complete with a makers & retail label which reads: “Gaimes Cutler and Perfumer No54 St Pauls Church Yard and No56 Cornhill ”

This storage compartment features two dividers and a secret! The left divider can be removed by pressing the lower wall of the center compartment. This allows the divider to be slid out and allows access to remove the base of the left hand compartment.
This grants access to a secure storage compartment which has a hidden drawer with letters. Yet there is another secret within! Pressing the right hand side wall near the top will case a false wall to spring forward revealing four bone sovereign cylinders.

The top of the open writing box features two satin wood lidded compartments, two travelling inkwells and a pen tray. Removing the pen tray reveals to brass gilded candle sconces which can be placed in the top edge of the open box.

On the left hand edge of the open box is a large key and key profile. This key is used to screw the captain’s writing box with all its ledgers and important items to a desk or surface, meaning it would remain stationary during choppy waves at sea and to stop the box from being stolen.
