From our Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this Belgian Spa Domino Box. The Dominoes Box of elongated rectangular shape veneered in Harewood is painted to the lid with a floral design. When opened the box reveals the original blue paper lining typical of Belgium Spa work housing a set of Antique Bone dominoes. The Spa Box now housing Dominoes could well have been used for various applications over the years during travelling to and from the Spa towns such as for Sewing purposes. The Box dates to the middle of the 19th century during the early Victorian years circa 1840.

Harewood is the name given to a type of sycamore maple which has been stained and treated to take the natural cream colour to a rich brown. It has a curled or “fiddleback” figure. Fiddleback is the name given to grain with tight curls, which derives from being popular to use on the back of stringed instruments.

Spa was born from a coming together of nature in the Principality of Liege which is nestled on the edge of the Hautes Fagnes in the heart of the Ardennes forest. It contains a wealth of iron ore and water sources that date back pre Roman era. Over many years travellers would come from far and wide to visit the area for holidays, history and a host of tourist activities. Artisans started to produce works to sell to these travellers and Spa work was born, often incorporating scenes from the local area and useful components such as sewing kits.
