Art Deco Cigarette Box

From our Boxes collection, we are pleased to offer this Macassar Ebony Cigarette Box. The Cigarette Box heavily influence by the Art Deco period is beautifully veneered in Macassar Ebony to the exterior with a stepped base containing single drawers, one to each side and a hinged top which opens via chromed handles to reveal pocket doors for holding cigarettes two compartments to the centre. The Macassar Ebony Cigarette Box dates to the Art Deco period circa 1930.

Macassar Ebony is found in Southeast Asia and has a dramatic striped appearance that is similar to Calamander with a relatively straight grain. It’s a very dense wood that is hard to work. The trees are slow growing and only grow in particular habitats, making this a rare and therefore sought after wood. It gets its name from the Indonesian Port of Makassar, where it is exported.

Art Deco was a style of visual arts, architecture, and product design that first appeared in France in the 1910s. It flourished in the United States and Europe during the 1920s to early 1930s. It was hugely prevalent through styling and design of the exterior and interior of anything from large structures to small objects and even influenced fashion and jewellery. Art Deco has influenced bridges, buildings, ships, ocean liners, trains, cars, trucks, buses, furniture, and everyday objects like radios and vacuum cleaners. It has become extremely popular today and is highly desirable to collectors and trendsetters in the fashion industry.
