Burr Yew Inlaid Tea Caddy Circa 1780

From our Tea Caddies collection, we are thrilled to offer this Georgian Burr Yew wood Tea Caddy. The Tea Caddy of square form veneered in Burr Yew wood with canted corners having inlaid Boxwood flutes. The front and lid feature oval cartouches with fan inlays, the lid surmounted with a brass handle and framed with chevron alternating stringing. The interior features a floating lid with a further brass handle and a foil lining. The Tea Caddy dates to the late 18th century during the Georgian period and the reign of George III circa 1780.

The Tea Caddy comes with a fully working lock and key.

Yew Wood originates from Asia, Europe and North Africa. It is yellow-brown to orange-brown and usually conforms to a fine uniform pattern. Yew wood usually has black pips scattered throughout so clean veneers fetch a high price and are reserved for finer items. A few trees will produce a burr which offers a distinct decorative finish.

Boxwood can be found in Europe, Northwest Africa and Southwest Asia. It is a light cream that turns darker to brown when exposed to light. The trees are very small, which is suited to smaller projects like edging or inlay instead of veneers.
